Writing & Whisky in Scotland
May 13 to 19, 2018 at Dalkeith House
Join us for 6 days & 7 nights at the “Palace” which is what locals call historic Dalkeith House, situated six miles outside Edinburgh. This is the former seat of the Duke of Buccleuch and the present-day house, built in 1702, is located on the site of an earlier castle.
Mornings will be your own private writing time. In the afternoons, you’ll be part of a workshop in either nonfiction with Robin Hemley or novel/fiction led by Kelly Dwyer. Our workshop groups are each limited to a maximum of 10 participants to ensure close attention to your work. Evenings are for salons where our authors present on writing craft, the writing life and publishing. We also welcome participants to share their work in short readings.
At this retreat we also are privileged to have Dan Bochman lead us on a day-long trip to Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery, followed by a visit to the Scottish borders to see Abbotsford House, home of Sir Walter Scott. Weather permitting we’ll take a coastal hike along the St. Abbs Head Nature Reserve. Dan will also speak at one of our evening salons on Scottish architecture, history, geography, culture and whisky.
Fee for the retreat is US $875 (AAL clients enjoy a 15% discount) and includes all workshops and salons, the welcome and farewell reception, as well as the day long excursion. Travel and accommodation are extra.
To apply send a writing sample of either fiction and/or nonfiction of between 10 to 15 manuscript pages (2,500 to 3,000 words) to email@example.com as a single document attachment. Please indicate the workshop you wish to take and put your name and contact email on your manuscript. Current and former AAL clients need not apply and may register directly at this link. Former MFA students of either Robin or Xu, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to waive the application process.
Once accepted to our retreat, you must register to guarantee your place and book your stay at Dalkeith House. You can make your booking by emailing [Dan? Ashley?].
We also offer for retreat participants only a special low rate of US$500 for a manuscript review of up to 25,000 words with either Robin or Kelly. To register please go to this link.
