2017 Hong Kong Retreat

Join this intensive urban weekend retreat to hone and advance your creative work.  TO APPLY email aalauthors@gmail.com a creative piece(s) prose only — between 2,000 to 3,000 words of fiction, nonfiction, or both genres for acceptance (yes, you can submit several shorter pieces) - please email your submission as a single WORD attachment (or RTF - no pdf’s please). We will workshop portions of your submitted piece(s) around key writing craft issues.  There will be discussions of craft and generative writing exercises, as well as exercises to revise your work. You will also have an opportunity to introduce your writing self through brief readings of your work.  Lunch time conversations about the business of writing.

Saturday/Sunday schedule:  Morning session 9:30 am to 12:30 • Lunch 12:30 to 2 pm • Afternoon 2 to 6 pm • Retreat group size limited to 20 • (minimum 9 participants for retreat to be held)

Friday 7 to 9:30 pm  introductions • “re-visioning” writing exercise • introductory short readings by participants

Saturday  • morning  workshop focus on basics • situation vs. story • the opening + generative writing exercise • lunch  writing life conversation • afternoon  workshop focus on scene setting • points of view • voice + generative writing exercise

SUNDAY • morning   workshop focus on character and persona • narrative flow and plot + generative writing exercise • lunch  publishing conversation • afternoon  workshop focus on raison d'etre of the work • perspective vs. point of view • revising vs. re-visioining • closing short readings by participants

Manuscript Review Special Offer  Only for registered participants at this retreat, Xu will offer a limited number of manuscript reviews of up to 7,500 words of a single creative piece OR excerpt of longer work for the special price of US$125 (HK$980).  You can choose either to receive a written review with notes on your manuscript or schedule a 40-minute conference (in person or by Skype/Facetime) to discuss your manuscript at a mutually convenient time.  Deadline for submission of this manuscript is flexible but should not be later than the start of the retreat.  Please email xuxiwriter@gmail.com to schedule your review.  NOTE:  for later registrants who are interested in this service, please email aalauthors@gmail.com to inquire about our regular manuscript review & consultation services.
